Gnome or KDE… usual dilemma.

Both have features that make them worthwhile, and vice versa, the following links are mainly for Gnome.

At the moment Ubuntu is the distro of choice, I like it cause it just works, so I recently subscribed to the Ubuntu blog. Good read, and handy tips there, like the following:

Baobab - Baobab is a C/gtk+ application to analyse directory trees in any Gnome environment.

Nautilus File Manager Scripts - FAQ for writing and understanding Nautilus scripts.

changing bridging device in vmware

October 26th, 2005 by Richard

note: this post is mainly for ubuntu (debian) users (or other linux users…)

want to change the primary bridging device in vmware?

edit /etc/vmware/locations find the lines that read answer VNET0INTERFACE eth0 (there are two of them typically) change eth0 to whatever you want to use as the new bridging device eth1 in my case.

restart your vmware services sudo /etc/init.d/vmware restart Note: make sure that you have no active vmware sessions active…

restart your vmware, and hey presto! should work … at least it did for me ;)

ubuntu … hedgehog to badger! - part 2

October 19th, 2005 by Richard

impressed! it just worked…

as far as I can tell there are no specific problems with the upgrade process. the only thing that caught my attention were the following.

  • the mac address of my nic changed: only reason I found this out was because when I restarted my system, I was unable to get an IP address from my router, and hence no network connectivity. I was stumped for a while, then took a look at the output from ifconfig, and compared to the mac address list on the routers, and thats where the problem occured.

  • when upgrading the packages, I got a warning regarding the signatures on the packages, but this problem seems to have been resolved now, as in I cannot replicate the error message.

So for the upgrade process, yes it went well, now I just need to find a spot of time to evaluate the benefits of the upgrade!

Saying that, I feel confident enough to apply the upgrade process to my work machine, with a spot of backing up first of course ;)

ubuntu … hedgehog to badger! - part 1

October 17th, 2005 by Richard

As of a few minutes ago, I kicked off a dist-upgrade on a box I have here at home.

What is special about this dist-upgrade is that it is going to upgrade from Ubuntu Hoary Hedgehog to Breeze badger. I looked around a little earlier today and heard nothing too bad about the upgrade process, so I decided to bite the bullet and give it a go, following these instructions from the Ubuntu Guide.

Lets see how it goes!

Ella Fitzgerald and ethnopoetics

October 10th, 2005 by Richard

a few days ago I decided to catch up with some new feeds, one of which pointed me here, a place that I stumbled across this summer when it was being revamped, Ubu web, it tickled my interest then, and then I forgot about it. I caught up with the site again, and browsing around, and saw a word that caught my interest, ethnopoetics… intrigued, I carried on.

Inuit throat singing, celtic mouth music, and many others. but the one I liked the most was this one, by Ella Fitzgerald.

In a piece like this transformation of Lady Be Good, she abandons Ira Gershwin’s catchy and playfully banal lyrics to create a new and uncompromised artwork.

play it loud and get lost in it, its wonderful!

better feed plugin…

October 5th, 2005 by Richard

i have realised that my entries do not appear as full text in news aggregators, and that annoyed, so I went about figuring out why. Apperently its a configuration thing, and I went and got a plugin to help me out. The aptly named better feed plugin, shows promise, although, upon installation and appropriate configuration, namely setting the following,

$wp_ozh_betterfeed[’split’]
Set to 1 (one) if you want your feed to obey the < !–more–> tag and add a “Read more” link. Set to 0 (zero) otherwise (print whole post, as in Wordpress default behavior)

but the last time I tried - no joy :( so hence I’m trying again…

lets see what the feed reader shows me now.

Update: Nope, did not work, at least not with Liferea anyway

comment spam…

October 5th, 2005 by Richard

Over the last few weeks, the amount of comment spam on my blog has been increasing. none of it appeared on the site, as all comments are moderated, but that meant that I had to repeatedly mark comments as spam as they came in.

I have since installed capcha!, a wordpress plugin that generates images with an alphanumeric code that needs to be entered in order for the comment to be approved. Lets see how this pans out.
