Is it just me…

February 27th, 2007 by

or is the latest Budweiser Ad, the one where you hear the sound of a woman screaming and a bunch of lads drop whatever they were doing on hearing that scream – and begin heroic (coug hcough) journeys to rescue what appears to sound like some maiden in distress, really really really annoying!

I must admit that I am not a Bud drinker, never cared for it, but an advertisement is supposed to make you want something? Right?
Do I really want to be associated with the  image  of some chap responding to a screaming man calling for not very tasty beer?

Not only that – the sound of that screaming… is grating… if it makes me think of anything, its certainly not a Bud, but to reach for the remote to make that bad sound go away

girl band for sale???

April 17th, 2006 by Richard

the article – This is the girl band you can buy – Sunday Times – Times Online (via Danger at tcal.net, is scaring me on so many levels.

the music industry has found ways and means of promoting their latest wonder hit in many ways over the years, but this is something new – and not to put too fine a word on it – insidious. perhaps I am being cynical, correction, I am intentionally being cynical, as this is what is happening. the bands they seem intent on promoting, are in too many cases devoid of talent, and seem to want to portray an idealistic world whereby all is good if you are faithful to this band and their promotional tours, merchandise and trite music. not being into this band/group makes you odd and you feel left out, until you get in on it. incidentally, this is not only endemic to the music industry, but that is a whole other story and not for this post.

music is a business, big business. as in any business, making your product the be-all and end-all, is the aim of the game. sadly in the case of the music industry, this makes for a wholelotta painful listening. in fairness, its not only the music. it is also the imagery and lifestyle that is portrayed. when popular girl bands, whose fan base includes young children under a certain age say, 13 (not being in a family way, it is hard to judge when the protective instinct really kicks in…), why must they insist on wearing clothes and behaving in a manner that is way above the targets audience’s range of experiences and stage in life. this must sound like I am an old prude, but I think it is part of the symptom of a greater ill.

our way of life is evolving, and part of that evolution has meant that we are now at a stage, when having the latest and greatest is a must. ways of life are leading to an overly excessive lifestyle, in food, drink, health, social inequalities. so many of these are interlinked, in a such a pervasive manner. we all fall into the trap, one way or another.

here is an amusing quote from the article,

Any resemblance to existing brands in the stage names of the girls — Mercedes, S-Jay, Rockwell and Chanel — is said to be entirely coincidental.

hmm….

it really makes me wonder at times, where we are headed. all the items i mentioned above have such deeper significance than they might appear at first glance. at times I pause and take a look at each thing mentioned, and I ponder about them, and a lot of what I see troubles me. I have just had a great weekend, plenty of outdoors for me, and it was good, really good, I’d hate to loose it.

French Government Lobbied to Ban Free Software

December 6th, 2005 by

this seems rather odd

French Government Lobbied to Ban Free Software

(via Michele), I was just there and did not hear any of that on the news… Granted it is now the 6th of December, but I imagine I would have heard something of it! granted I was also in the process of helping to arrange and finalise and help host my mothers birthday (which was a great success btw), but still.

I got a few techie magazines when I was there (that I have not had time to read yet), but will hopefully do shortly, and see if there is anything in them about that this interestingly scary story. The mags are French linux and security magazines,

.

Three usually good reads

Tim Bray has more on the matter, and here are some interestingly ominous thoughts such as,

It seems that the aim would be to make free software illegal. I don’t think this is being realistic. Appart from the fact that it would put France back into the dark ages from an IT perspective, it seems also not very enforcable.

The innovations that many companies come up with are often based on free software, and to the stiffle that innovation would really be a throw back for all the effort that has gone into the free software and open source ideologies, and the great results achieved.

Lets really hope that it does not get to that … Perhaps there is a legal avenue that can be taken on a European level, through respective MEP’s, to prevent such laws to come into place, lest some other country get the same notion…

comment spam…

October 5th, 2005 by

Over the last few weeks, the amount of comment spam on my blog has been increasing. none of it appeared on the site, as all comments are moderated, but that meant that I had to repeatedly mark comments as spam as they came in.

I have since installed capcha!, a wordpress plugin that generates images with an alphanumeric code that needs to be entered in order for the comment to be approved. Lets see how this pans out.

upgrade!

August 23rd, 2005 by

well – at last I got around to upgrading wordpress…

as per my last post, some of you might noticed that my site was hacked! I eventually got around to figuring out where the problem was (without, I may add – much help from the hosting guys), and I’m pretty sure that it was WordPress.

The version that was previously running was subject to sql injection attacks, and from the info I was able to gather, it appears as if it is possible to get access to local directory from such an attack. I’m still looking into it, as it is intriguing. If any of you have more information on this type of thing, I would appreciate a comment ;)

So the theme is not what it used to be, but that is part of the todo-do list, which is to come up with a new theme overall for the site, have it all looking the same.

hacked eh…

August 15th, 2005 by

not the happiest bunny on the planet…

Apparently, some guys got the pleasure of hacking the index page of this site, with a very imaginative, nay truly wordy selection of prose.
See the page here.

I’m now waiting for the post mortem from the hosting guys, to see what the story is.

A good rant

April 5th, 2005 by

Reading a computer security mailing list recently subscribed to, I came across this rather good rant, about something we must have had thought that we should have said, or maybe even have said, at some time reading mailing lists, forums and blogs, but perhaps not quite as elegantly sharp!

“Before you send another email, I ask that you strap on a clue-bag, chew on it for a while, really /digest/ the clue, then fire up that mail client. It’ll be a good thing.”

If per chance, you are the author of those lines, then fairplay to you.
If per chance, you were in the receipt of thoses lines, I understand – its happened to many of us.
Does technology, make us feel that because we wish to/can become competent at/with it, that we can be boorish“aristocratic contempt for the swinish multitude”, or that we can expect to have all questions answered at the drop of hat?

All the same, still liked the line…
